Question by curious and knowledge: Do you feel it is safe for our pet to travel a long distance on a flight distance of 13 hours?
Our pet will be travelling on a flight from Beijing to Hawaii……about 13 hours. I’ve heard certain pets cannot travel a long distance without having nervousness, respiratory problems, etc. I hear that certain pug nose dogs, like the bulldog may not breath properly and result in death. Is this true? Do vets recommend these type of dogs for lengthy travel? What do vets recommend? Are there insurance for travel for pets? What are your suggestions? We plan to use Japan airlines to transport our pet and hopefully this carrier will properly see that the cabin pressure and temperature will be condusive to good travelling.

That is too long to go into the freight area, but he might be ok in the cabin with you (in his kennel) where he can at least see and hear you. You might need to sedate him to prevent stress and hyperventilation. Dehydration is a real concern.
Talk to your vet.

Check around! Many airlines will allow you to travel with your pet on the same flight. However, you must inform the airline and confirm their pet travel protocol.

Question by Anna M: Recommended airline dachshund carrier?
We’re going to fly (on Jetblue) with our dachshund puppy for the first time in about three weeks and I was wondering if anyone had good recommendations for a dachshund-specific soft sided carrier. She was about 9 lbs at 15 weeks and will be about 19 weeks when we fly, so maybe about 11-12 pounds then, but it would be great if we could buy somthing she could “grow into”. Any recommendations for specific carriers or websites to purchase them on?

I got a Samonite from a local pet store. Go to JetBlue’s website and see if they have any specific regulations. Otherwise most pet stores carry a few crates that are marked as airline approved.
Do do a search for pet travel. There are several out there.
Some tips, get there early. You dog will have to come out of the crate for security. Take potty breaks before you got in and after you land. You may want to give the dog a chew toy for take off, so help pop thier ears. The dog will have to go under the seat for take off and land, but if I have a space beside me I take my crate and put it beside me. One thing, my dog was very scared during the flight. Actually growled at a flight attendent, something he has NEVER done before. So just a warning.
Good luck and happy trails.
